Mission Statement

The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to Search and Rescue (SAR) and safe boating activities.

Our mission is to provide a permanent day and night search and rescue service to cover marine requirements in Canada and prevent the loss of life and injury.

To fulfill this mission, our objectives are to :

• Save 100% of lives at risk;
• Reduce the number and severity of SAR incidents;
• Promote marine safety;
• Support the Canadian Coast Guard;
• Provide a humanitarian service;
• Maintain the highest professional standards;
• Promote dedication and pride of membership.

Background

The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Central & Arctic Region, CCGA (C&A), was incorporated in September 1978 under the sponsorship of the Federal Government, for the purpose of providing organized voluntary maritime search and rescue (SAR), and the promotion of safety afloat; in an Auxiliary support role to the Canadian Coast Guard.  Over the past 45 years, the CCGA has evolved into an effective non-profit organization that saves lives nationwide.

The CCGA (C&A) supports the Canadian Coast Guard with 1013 volunteer members using 83 vessels.  The volunteers of Central & Arctic provide approx 123,671 hours of service per year.
The organizational structure of Central & Arctic is testament to its grassroots strengths and diversity by providing SAR response, boating safety and prevention messages to the largest geographic area within the CCGA      

  • 4 provinces and 2 territories;
  • 64 % of Canada´s land mass;
  • 1 % of Canada´s coastline;
  • 65 % of Canada´s maritime waters;
  • 67 % of Canada´s freshwater;
  • 56 % of Canada´s population;
  • Great Slave Lake is the fifth largest lake in Canada;
  • Mackenzie River is the longest river in Canada;
  • Lake Athabasca, Slave and Athabasca River from Great Slave Lake to Fort McMurray.
  • Lake Winnipeg is the sixth largest freshwater lake in Canada;
  • Ontario is the home of the Great Lakes;
  • 1.2 million boats in Ontario;
  • 780,000 boats on the Great Lakes in Ontario
  • Over 175 Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Safety Specialists in the Region

Each regional CCGA corporation is a unique, incorporated entity, registered as a charitable organization delivering services to meet the national CCGA objectives within the region.
